Automotive News reports Toyota will power its IQ microcar with an engine from Yamaha. That from unnamed company executives.

Toyota’s not volunteering any information on the powertrain selected for a production version of the minicar concept, which showed up in Frankfurt sans engine. The sources say Yamaha Motor, may build the engine for Toyota. Though we’d imagine they could just slap in the 1.2-liter four from the V-Max and start a minicar horsepower war.

Thanks to a long wheelbase and almost no overhangs Toyota got the maximum of space in this little car. Also details like the flat fuel tank under the seats, a smaller heater / air condition unit and slimmer seats helps to extend the room.

The production version of Toyota’s iQ microcar is expected to hit showrooms later this year as well but will be sold in Europe only. Edmunds says that the iQ will offer “seating for four in a body just under than 10 feet long. By comparison, the two-seater 2008 Smart Fortwo is 8 feet 8 inches long and the four-seater 2008 Mini Cooper is 11 feet 8 inches long.”
